Find two Interpretive Columns

Instructions: Find two interpretive columns based on the examples discussed in class and post them to Canvas and answer the following questions:

Stop Shaming Women for what they do their face

What do you like about the writing style in the column?

I liked how the author used strong words but the material was still digestible. I liked how she started off with facts about The Weeknd's performance in a way that would make the reader think that The Weeknd was supporting her view but then she takes a stab at it with her own perspective. I thought the argument was well supported and tied into other concepts like "pretty privilege" and "body positivity."

Do you agree with the writer's point of view? What persuasive points does the writer make in the column?

I agree with the writer's point of view that society should not criticize or blame women who wear makeup or get cosmetic surgery. She was persuasive when she clarifies women do not enhance their features for men and thinking they do is misogynistic and solidifies a male-centered ideology. I agree that when it comes to beauty standards and looks, women are at a catch-22. It makes the readers realize that women will be criticized if they do no look conventional pretty and also be criticized if they are not entirely physically authentic.

Did the lead draw your interest to the story?

The opinion becomes clear a few paragraphs down after she describes The Weeknd's performance. I like how the lead was not given right off the bat but the opinion being extremely clear and eye-catching when she criticizes the famous pop-star for his internalized misogyny.

GameStop and the war on Wall Street

What do you like about the writing style in the column?

I like how the column came off as a story instead of an aggressive opinion.

Do you agree with the writer's point of view? What persuasive points does the writer make in the column?

I agree that the Redditor's move with Gamestop is much more about making money- it's about class consciousness, the long-standing discontent with the rich, and the ability to create a different reality instantly. The author is persuasive when he uses colorful and witty quotes from one of the Redditors.

Did the lead draw your interest to the story?
I was drawn in by the first sentence because it was dramatic. I like how the author used "war" to signify the divide between the Redditors and Wall Street. I was excited to see how the juxtaposition of the two would play out further in the article.
